IS 18480:2025 – A Comprehensive Standard for Self-Tapping Screws

Introduction

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has released IS 18480:2025, the first revision of the Indian Standard for self-tapping screws. This new document consolidates earlier fragmented standards—IS 7169:2018, IS 7170:2018, and IS 7173:2018—into one unified specification. It reflects BIS’s continuing effort to align Indian manufacturing with global practices while ensuring product safety, reliability, and performance.

Why Self-Tapping Screws Matter

Self-tapping screws are versatile fasteners capable of creating their own threads as they are driven into materials like metal, wood, or plastics. They are widely used in woodworking, metalworking, electronics, automotive, and construction due to their ability to eliminate pre-threaded holes, resist loosening under vibration, and provide secure fastening with minimal tools.

Key Highlights of the New Standard

  1. Consolidation and Expansion
  • Earlier separate standards for cross-recessed and slotted head self-tapping screws have been merged.
  • Newly added categories include hexalobular (Torx/star) socket head screws and hexagon head screws.
  1. Reference to International Standards

IS 18480:2025 draws from globally recognized standards such as ISO 1479, ISO 1481, ISO 7049, ISO 14585, and others, ensuring compatibility and global acceptance.

  1. Dimensions and Tolerances
  • Default dimensions are provided in detailed tabulations (Tables 1–13).
  • Flexibility is retained: where non-standard shapes are required, dimensions may be agreed between user and manufacturer, provided performance requirements are met.
  1. Material Requirements
  • Steel screws must comply with IS 7178.
  • Stainless steel screws must follow IS 1367 (Part 14/ Sec 4).
  • Protective finishes allowed include electroplating, hot-dip galvanizing, zinc flake coating, or passivation for stainless steel.
  1. Performance & Testing

The standard mandates specific tests to verify the self-tapping capability, durability under vibration, and coating performance. Sampling and acceptance follow IS 1367 (Part 17).

  1. Marking & Traceability
  • Each package must display designation, type of coating, manufacturer’s mark, and batch/lot number.
  • Products meeting requirements may bear the BIS Standard Mark, in line with the BIS Act, 2016.

Implications for Industry

  • Manufacturers: Gain a single, harmonized reference standard covering all major head designs, simplifying compliance and reducing duplication.
  • End Users: Can be assured of consistent performance and safety across diverse applications.
  • Exporters: Alignment with ISO and JIS standards supports global competitiveness.

Conclusion

IS 18480:2025 marks a significant step forward in standardizing self-tapping screws in India. By merging multiple earlier standards, expanding the scope to include newer head types, and aligning with international benchmarks, BIS has ensured that Indian fastener manufacturers and users can rely on a comprehensive and future-ready specification.
